Clinical and pathogenetic aspects of intestinal disorders have recently become of greater interest, partly due to the increasing incidence of intestinal disorders. However, our expanded knowledge, brought about by developing molecular biological sciences, provokes the need for more frequent discussion. Nowadays a wider range of diagnostic tools is available. Beside more sophisticated laboratory methods, the development of modern radiological techniques has opened new dimensions to diagnostic measurement. At the same time therapeutic methods have undergone numerous changes. New aspects are provided by biological therapies and the changing role of conventional medication, which may raise new questions.Table of contents List of principal contributorsList of chairpersonsPrefaceSECTION I: DISEASES OF THE RECTUM AND THE PERIANAL REGION.- 1 Outlet obstruction: diagnosis and treatment 2008.- 2 Fistulas and fissures – diagnosis and treatment.- SECTION II: DIVERTICULAR DISEASE AND IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME.- 3 Treatment algorithms for diverticulitis.- 4 Diagnosis and treatment of diverticular bleeding.- 5 Drug treatment of irritable bowel syndrome – different approaches for different subgroups?.- SECTION III: NOVEL CONCEPTS IN INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE.- 6 Defective barrier – therapeutic implications?.- 7 The innate immune system as a therapeutic target in inflammatory bowel diseases.- 8 Subgroups of Crohn's disease – are there therapeutic differences?.- 9 Prediction of treatment success -- will there be genetic or serologic markers?.- SECTION IV: CASES AND CONTROVERSIES.- 10 Obstruction in Crohn's disease.- 11 A patient with refractory bleeding in proctosigmoiditis.- 12 Mild to moderate ulcerative colitis: sequential and combined treatments.- 13 A patient with duodenal stenosis in Crohn's disease -- case report.- 14 A patient with duodenal stenosis in Crohn's disease: endoscopic and drug treatment may be successful.- 15 Surgical bypass as a long-term solution.- SECTION V: LIVE DEMONSTRATION.- SECTION VI: LIVE DEMONSTRATION.- SECTION VII: TUMOURS OF THE SMALL AND LARGE BOWEL.- 16 Lymphoma -- staging and treatment 2008.- 17 Gastrointestinal stromal tumours: the paradigm of a bench-to-bedside disease.- 18 Gut neuroendocrine tumours – new treatment options?.- SECTION VIII: COLORECTAL CARCINOMA.- 19 Which method of secondary prevention is really feasible and useful?.- 20 Colorectal cancer surveillance after colon cancer resection and post-polypectomy.- 21 Progress in the treatment of colorectal cancer: the impact of new drugs.- SECTION IX: STATE-OF-THE-ART LECTURE.- 22 The difference of a decade: looking backward and forward at gastroenterology.- Index
