Anaesthetists and intensivists must master key basic sciences-including physics, clinical measurement, and equipment-to succeed in UK and international examinations. These topics can challenge residents whose backgrounds are predominantly clinical, especially when prior knowledge of mathematics or physics has not been used for years.
Drawing on extensive clinical, engineering, and teaching expertise, the authors present a clear and structured guide to these essential principles in 31 focused chapters. The book is organised into three sections: basic scientific foundations, clinical measurement, and equipment.
Fully aligned with the RCoA and FICM curricula, this comprehensive yet accessible, third edition is an ideal resource for residents preparing for the Primary and Final FRCA examinations and the FFICM Final examination.
Patrick Magee PhD, FRCA, spent thirty-eight years as a clinical anaesthetist, his consultant post being at Royal United Hospital Bath. He taught resident anaesthetists locally and nationally, in physics, clinical measurement and equipment, and undergraduate engineering students in human physiology and biomedical engineering. He is a past visiting lecturer at Bath University, UCL and the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA). He was an examiner for twelve years for UK RCoA Primary Examination, as well as for eleven years for the European Diploma of Anaesthesiology. He sat on biomedical engineering committees at two engineering institutions (IET, IMechE), the British Standards Institute and the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Mark A Tooley BSc MSc PhD CEng CSci FInstP FIET FIPEM FRCP FREng was the head of Medical physics and Bioengineering and Director of Research and Development at the Royal United Hospitals in Bath. He is an honorary professor at the University of Bath. He is a past president of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine. After his retirement, he was a specialist scientific advisor for NHS England, a Digital Clinical advisor for the West of England Academic Health Science network and a member of the Medical Technology Advisory Committee of NICE. Mark taught for many years on physics in anaesthesia, EEG and electricity courses for anaesthetists in Bristol and London. His interests are in depth of anaesthesia, bio-signals, clinical measurement, simulation in medicine and innovative patient monitoring solutions.
