Periodontal therapy is indicated, with appropriate adaptation and personalization, for all types of patients and is an essential supplement to all the dental specialties.
Appropriate periodontal therapy, applying principles of primary prevention that are scrupulously followed from childhood, could allow patients to keep their own natural, healthy, functional, and good-looking smiles for a lifetime.
Nonsurgical periodontal therapy must always be preceded by a specific and accurate diagnosis to plan a therapeutic intervention specific to the individual needs of each patient.

Nonsurgical periodontal therapy:
Performed under conditions of complete oral health, aims to prevent the occurrence of disease and maintain conditions of absolute health
Performed in the presence of pathologic changes that maintain characteristics of reversibility, as in the case of gingivitis or mucositis, ensures complete oral healing
Associated with complex oral pathologic conditions, is still always indicated, but the recovery of oral health is a goal that becomes proportionally more challenging depending on the severity of the case; many other variables are also involved, which are mainly related to patients and their behavior
Can be a definitive treatment, if conditions of clinical stability are achieved
Can be an initial yet necessary treatment before therapeutic interventions, including surgery, following clinical reevaluation
Can be an alternative treatment that is often not ideal, but still indicated to improve an inflammatory condition
Can be a support treatment to prolong the survival of natural elements or implants if no other type of treatment may be indicated for various reasons
Is in any case the therapy required to maintain the long-term outcome of any successful dental treatment
Is not associated with any contraindications if properly carried out in a specific and personalized manner
